Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck
Tune into HCAT Friday, September 11, 2020 at 7 p.m. for a showing of the historical documentary Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck”.
Created by Andrew Giles Buckley, producer of “Hit and Run History” and “Through My Eyes”, this 90-minute film was written in honor of the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower. It follows the story of Stephen Hopkins, the only Mayflower passenger who had been to the New World before. A decade earlier, aboard the Jamestown-bound Sea Venture, Hopkins and the other castaways lived for nine months on Bermuda before sailing for Virginia. Condemned to death for mutiny, Hopkins’ misadventures were immortalized in the drunken butler Stephano in Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
The program is supported in part by a grant from the Holliston Cultural Council, a local agency supported by the Mass Cultural council, a state agency. The following groups have worked together to be able to share this program: The Holliston Public Library, the Holliston Historical Society, and Hit and Run History, in collaboration with HCAT.
